Counter Heat Drive – June 2015

Karachi, Pakistan, June 29, 2015 – In the third quarter of June 2015, Karachi, Pakistan’s biggest metropolis was hit by a deadly ‘Heat Wave’. This heat wave left the city in peril with hundreds of lives lost and more at stake. As always the residents of this city came together to help those who were struggling in the aftermath of this horror.

Major hospitals of the city were turned into depots for collection of necessities including clean drinking water, ice, towels, water coolers, and other sources of replenishment to fight the scorching sun. In such treacherous times, ‘The Akram Foundation’ together with the help of a team of devoted volunteers was able to design, execute and complete a water drive for multiple areas of the city under the name of “Counter Heat Drive”.

Targeting major, minor hospitals, bystanders, mongers, street children, public transporters and labour community, the foundation was able to successfully deliver drinking water and provisions to combat the searing heat that too during the Holy Month of Ramadan. Our team of volunteers and two representing heads were able to cover the following areas of the city:

– North Nazimabad
– Most Parts of Saddar
– Orangi Town
– Malir Halt
– And Model Colony

The drive lasted for 2 days with each day spanning over 9 hours. The drive was accomplished owing to combined efforts made by the Team of Volunteers, Representing Personnel from the Foundation, Foundation’s Vehicle Incharge and Transport Vendor for the Foundation. We like to take this moment and forward our special gratitude to all the students who volunteered for our water drive and put their heart ahead of the heat. None of this would have been possible, if it wasn’t for mentorship of Wasim and Shaniera Akram. With their generous contribution and guidance, and with the Blessings of Almighty Allah, the volunteers were able to complete the mission at hand.

Over 1200 live are lost till date to this lethal heat wave and as a foundation our only aim was to bring some kind of relief for the victims and their families. We will continue to provide support, provisions and assistance to those in need. This is our first step towards the many to come.
